You finally know the angle you're after. Then you go looking for something to sharpen with, and the floor drops out. A fifteen-dollar stone or a two-hundred-dollar guided system. Diamonds, ceramics, or some waterstone with a cult following. Every thread has a convert who'll tell you the other options are for people who don't really care. The tool was supposed to be the simple part.
Here's what quiets the noise. No medium sharpens a knife. You do. Every tool on that wall does the same single job — drag an abrasive across steel until two faces meet at a fresh apex — and they differ in only two ways: how fast they cut, and how much they leave you in control. Pick the one whose answers match the steel in your hand and the work in front of you, and the religion stops mattering.
How It Works
Every Tool, One Job
Strip away the brands and every sharpener is the same thing: abrasive, harder than your steel, removing metal a little at a time. The only real variable is grit. A coarse grit takes off a lot of steel fast and leaves a rough surface behind. A fine grit takes off almost nothing and leaves a smooth one. That's it. Coarse isn't worse than fine and fine isn't better than coarse — they're stages. Coarse sets the shape: it reprofiles an edge or grinds out a chip. Fine refines what coarse left: it cleans up the scratches and brings the apex to a point.
The Two Questions Behind Every Tool
How much steel do you need to move? Coarse and powered tools remove a lot, fast — for reshaping and repair. Fine grits and rods remove almost none — for refining and upkeep.
How much control do you want to keep? Freehand on a stone hands you all of it, and asks for skill in return. Guided rods and systems hold the angle for you, and hand back a result that's hard to get wrong.
There's a second thing the grit decides, and most people miss it: the finish a medium leaves isn't just cosmetic — it changes how the edge cuts. A coarse-finished edge is microscopically toothy, a row of tiny serrations that grab and tear through fibrous material — rope, cardboard, the skin of a tomato. A finely polished edge is smooth, and it push-cuts clean — whittling, shaving, a quiet draw through soft material. Neither is sharper in the abstract. They're sharp for different cuts.
So before the brand of stone, two questions decide almost everything: how much steel you need to move, and how clean a finish you want to leave. The four families of tool differ mostly in how they answer the first.

Four Ways
to Move Steel
Lay the common tools out on a single line, from the one that removes the most steel to the one that removes the least, and the choices organize themselves.
The stone. A block of bonded abrasive — a waterstone, an oilstone, a simple benchstone. The oldest tool here and still the one most worth learning. You hold the angle by hand, which is the entire difficulty and the entire reward: total control, and a real learning curve to earn it. Waterstones cut fast and wear hollow, so they need flattening now and then; oilstones cut slower and stay flatter longer. A coarse stone and a fine one cover nearly everything a carry knife will ever ask. Cheap to start, and the skill transfers to every other knife you'll own. Reach for it when you want full control and you're willing to learn the hand.
The diamond plate. Industrial diamond bonded to a flat steel or plastic plate — the hardest abrasive there is, with two consequences that matter. It cuts any steel, including the high-carbide alloys that make ordinary stones slip and skate. And it stays dead flat — no dishing, nothing to flatten. It's fast, aggressive even at its finer grits, and it asks the same freehand discipline a stone does. It costs more up front and outlives the difference. Reach for it for hard, wear-resistant steels, for speed, and for a reference surface that never moves.
The belt. A powered abrasive belt — the maker's tool, and the fastest one a person can own. It removes metal quicker than anything else here, which is its gift and its danger in the same breath. It reprofiles and repairs in seconds. But the belt flexes, so it leaves a rounded, convex edge, and speed makes heat — run a thin edge against a moving belt a moment too long and you can overheat the steel past the point its heat treatment set. Draw the temper that way and no amount of resharpening brings the hardness back; you've cooked the edge. The most capable tool on the bench is also the only one that can quietly ruin a blade. Reach for it for reprofiling, repair, and volume — with a light hand and a cool edge.
The rod. Ceramic rods and the guided systems built around them — the maintenance end of the line. They remove almost nothing; they realign and refine an edge that's still mostly there. A few light passes on a ceramic rod brings a working edge back between real sharpenings. V-shaped rod systems hold the angle for you, trading away some control for a result that's genuinely hard to get wrong — the easiest place to start if freehand intimidates you. A leather strop with a little polishing compound is the same idea taken to its finish: it strips the burr and polishes the apex, the last step after everything else. Reach for it for upkeep, touch-ups, and finishing — never for reshaping.

A belt and a strop are both exactly the right tool — for completely different days.
Test it at home — the marker trick. Whatever tool you've got, this tells you the truth in one pass. Color the existing bevel with a permanent marker, make one slow, light stroke on the stone, and look at the ink. Gone at the very edge but still there up by the shoulder? You're holding too steep — only the apex is touching. Gone at the shoulder but not the edge? Too shallow — you're grinding above the edge and never reaching it. Lifted evenly across the whole bevel? You've matched the angle, and you can sharpen with confidence. It costs one marker and shows you instantly what your hands are actually doing — which no amount of reading ever will.

There's one rule underneath all four families, and it reaches back to Part Three: an abrasive can only cut what's softer than it is. Most bonded stones are made of aluminum oxide or silicon carbide — hard, but not harder than the carbides packed into a high-vanadium steel. Ask one of those stones to sharpen a steel like that and it burnishes the soft matrix while the carbides ride over the surface untouched. You polish for an hour and never actually cut the apex. Diamond sits above every carbide there is, so it cuts them all. That's why the steel you chose quietly decides the medium you need.
This is the other half of what your steel allows. S35VN carries fine, modest carbides — niobium and a measured amount of vanadium — so a decent bonded stone still cuts it cleanly and a diamond plate just does it faster. A steel built around huge vanadium carbides for maximum wear resistance buys you more days between sharpenings, then demands diamond and patience when the day finally comes. Neither is wrong. But part of the bill for a steel's edge-holding is paid back at the sharpening bench — and it's worth knowing which bill you signed before you're standing there with the wrong stone.

Here's the part the gear shelves would rather you didn't settle on. Most carry knives are kept keen for the price of a modest stone and ten quiet minutes. The wall of premium systems is mostly sold to a worry — that you're doing it wrong, that real sharpness lives behind one more purchase. It doesn't. A good coarse-and-fine stone, maybe a strop to finish, will hold a working everyday edge for the rest of your life. The skill is the upgrade, not the gear.
That isn't an accident of the MERINO line; it's a choice baked into it. The steel and the edge — S35VN at 60–62 HRC, ground to a 20–25° edge — weren't picked to win a wear-resistance number that would force you toward a diamond plate and a lost afternoon. They were picked so a simple stone brings the edge back keen, because a knife you can actually maintain is a knife you'll actually keep carrying. The same carry-first logic that set the weight and the lock set the steel you'd have to sharpen.
